Tenida Samagra brings together Narayan Gangopadhyay’s adventures of Tenida — Bhajahari Mukherjee — and his three friends Pyala, Habul, and the narrator Kyabla. Tenida is a creation of post-Independence Bengali children’s fiction: a tall, hungry, slightly cowardly Calcutta boy who is also, when matters get serious, surprisingly brave.

The stories are set in the lanes and rooftops of central Calcutta and on holiday trips to small towns and villages. Tenida’s gang gets pulled into ghost stories, mistaken-identity capers, and amateur detective work, almost always over food. Narayan Gangopadhyay has a great ear for Bengali boyhood — for the boasting, the catchphrases, the loyalty that gets renegotiated every afternoon.

For Bengali readers who grew up on these stories, Tenida is a permanent friend. For new readers, the collected edition is the best entry point: it shows the full arc of the friendship and is one of the warmest books ever written in the language.
