BOOK EXCERPT

“The Frogs” is a comedy by the ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes, first performed in 405 BCE at the Lenaia festival. The play is notable for its commentary on Athenian politics and the state of Greek tragedy, as well as for its inventive use of the refrain. The story follows the god Dionysus, who, despairing of the quality of living tragedians, descends to the underworld to bring back the playwright Euripides.
