Fingersmith by Sarah Waters is a historical fiction novel set in the 1860s, featuring two women who are involved in a plot of thievery, betrayal, and mistaken identity. Sue Trinder is an orphan who lives with a family of petty thieves, or fingersmiths, in a London slum. She is hired by a con man, Gentleman, to pose as a maid for Maud Lilly, a wealthy heiress who lives in a secluded country estate.

Gentleman plans to seduce and marry Maud, and then have her committed to an asylum and take her fortune. Sue agrees to help him, but soon develops feelings for Maud and regrets her role in the scheme. However, nothing is as it seems, and Sue and Maud discover that they have been manipulated by a web of lies and secrets.
