A. H. Kim
A Good Family started from something its author lived through. While A. H. Kim's sister-in-law served a sentence at the federal prison camp in Alderson, West Virginia, Kim helped look after her brother and her nieces. The 2020 novel keeps that situation and invents everything around it. Hannah Min becomes the relative the household leans on after Beth, her sister-in-law, goes to prison over a corporate scandal, and the two women's versions of the same marriage, the same money and the same family never quite line up. Born in Seoul, Kim was brought to America as a small child. She read law at Berkeley after Harvard College, edited the California Law Review, and spent years in corporate practice, ending as chief of staff to the chief executive and head of investor relations at a Fortune 200 company. She publishes under her initials.
