Before the Coffee Gets Cold is a novel by the Japanese writer Toshikazu Kawaguchi, set in a small basement cafe in Tokyo that has served coffee for more than a hundred years. A legend says that visitors can travel back in time by sitting in one particular seat. The rules are strict: you can only meet people who have been to the cafe, nothing you do can change the present, and you must finish your coffee before it gets cold. The book follows four customers who use the chance to speak with someone they have lost or never had the courage to talk to. The novel began as a stage play, and it was translated into English by Geoffrey Trousselot. A gentle story about love, regret and second chances.

Toshikazu Kawaguchi is a Japanese author, screenwriter, and director born in Osaka, Japan. He has received the Grand Prize of the Suginami Theatre Festival for his stage version of Before the Coffee Gets Cold as well as having been nominated for the Bookseller's Award for the novel version.
