A. N. Afanasyev

Alexander Nikolayevich Afanasyev (1826-1871) was a Russian folklorist and historian, often called the Russian counterpart to the Brothers Grimm. Working from earlier archives and oral sources, he compiled the largest collection of East Slavic folktales of his century, shaping how Russian folklore was understood ever after.
