Author: A S M Hutchinson
A S M Hutchinson began his English writing career in journalism, including work for Pearson’s Magazine and the Daily Graphic. Once Aboard the Lugger, his first novel, appeared in 1908 and carries the fuller subtitle The History of George and His Mary. The book announces itself as a comedy about ordinary people, following George and Mary through courtship, misunderstandings, and a deliberately playful narrative voice. Its title comes from a familiar melodramatic phrase, but Hutchinson repeatedly turns that convention toward domestic humor rather than nautical adventure. He later became widely known for If Winter Comes, while earlier novels such as The Happy Warrior helped establish his reputation on both sides of the Atlantic. His experience in periodical journalism sharpened the direct address, comic timing, and episodic movement found in the debut. Once Aboard the Lugger consequently shows Hutchinson before his later popular success, already testing how a narrator could speak to readers as an amused participant in the story.
