Supreme Whispers rests on interviews the American scholar George Gadbois conducted with Indian Supreme Court judges between 1983 and 1988, which then sat unpublished for thirty years. Chandrachud edited and framed them into an account of how judges were actually appointed, through personal networks and caste and regional balancing rather than through the formal procedure. He practises at the Bombay High Court, holds degrees from Harvard and Oxford, and writes constitutional history. His father served as Chief Justice of India, a fact he states rather than leaves for readers to discover.
