Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish were Long Island neighbours who met in a parents' group led by the child psychologist Haim Ginott, and they spent decades turning his approach into plain instructions. Neither held a clinical licence. Faber, a New Yorker born in 1928, took her degree at Queens College and a master's in education at New York University, then taught in city high schools for eight years. How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk, published in 1980, came directly out of the workshops the pair ran, and is built from sample dialogue, cartoons and exercises rather than argument. Faber died on 24 April 2024, aged 96. Mazlish had died in 2017.
