Alex Sanchez uses fiction for young people to explore identity, family, friendship and faith. Born in Mexico City to parents of German-Mexican and Cuban heritage, he moved to Texas at five. He earned a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Old Dominion and spent many years counseling young people and families in several countries. Rainbow Boys became his first published novel and began a three-book sequence. The God Box examines the questions faced by Christian teenagers, and the New York Public Library named it a Book for the Teen Age. Bait won both the Florida Book Award Gold Medal for fiction for younger readers and the Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award. Boyfriends with Girlfriends was chosen as an ALA Quick Pick and named a Lambda Literary Award finalist. Sanchez also wrote the Lambda-winning So Hard to Say and the DC Comics graphic novel You Brought Me the Ocean, illustrated by Julie Maroh. The Lambda Literary Foundation honored his body of work with the 2011 Jim Duggins Outstanding Mid-Career Novelists’ Prize.
