Alice Munro
1931
Dear Life, published in 2012, was the last book Alice Munro finished before she stopped writing, and it closes with four pieces she described as not quite stories, taken directly from her childhood in Wingham, Ontario. It won the Trillium Book Award in June 2013, and four months later the Swedish Academy awarded her the Nobel Prize in Literature, calling her a master of the contemporary short story. Munro had given six decades to that single form, almost entirely refusing the novel, and had already collected the Man Booker International Prize in 2009, three Governor General's Literary Awards and two Giller Prizes. She died at her home in Port Hope, Ontario on 13 May 2024, aged 92.
