Ann Beattie, an American novelist and short-story writer, is recognized for compressed portraits of friendship, family, and uncertain domestic life. Her second story collection, Secrets & Surprises, appeared from Random House in 1978. Its fifteen stories include A Vintage Thunderbird, The Lawn Party, Friends, and La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans. Beattie’s characters often speak around what matters most, leaving changes in loyalty or affection visible through objects, pauses, travel, and ordinary social rituals. That restraint became a defining feature of stories published early in her career by The New Yorker.
