Alexander Grin
Alexander Grin was the literary name of Russian writer Aleksandr Stepanovich Grinevsky, known for romantic adventure fiction set in imagined ports, islands, and coastal cities. The Seeker of Adventure is an English collection of his stories, issued by Progress Publishers in 1978. Its fuller bibliographic title is The Seeker of Adventure: Selected Stories, and the translation credits include Fainna Glagoleva, Nicholas Luker, and Barry Scherr. The volume presents travelers, sailors, dreamers, and uncanny events drawn from the invented geography readers often call Grinlandia. Grin’s best-known work, Scarlet Sails, similarly joins maritime adventure with the idea that determined imagination can alter an ordinary life. Before establishing himself in print, he held varied jobs and began publishing stories in the early twentieth century. His prose remained separate from dominant Soviet realism, favoring invented Western-sounding settings and moral fables about freedom, loyalty, and hope. The Seeker of Adventure demonstrates the breadth of that approach across short fiction rather than reducing his career to a single celebrated romantic tale.
