Ann Radcliffe

Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) was an English novelist whose Gothic romances, among them The Mysteries of Udolpho and The Italian, made her the most popular and best paid writer of the 1790s. She perfected the technique of the explained supernatural, which shaped later horror and mystery fiction.
