Anna Kingsford
Anna Kingsford was an English physician, campaigner, editor, and religious thinker whose visionary writing grew alongside her work for women's and animal causes. She earned a medical degree in Paris after pursuing a course that avoided experiments on animals, then became active in vegetarian and theosophical circles. Dreams and Dream Stories gathers records of dreams, allegorical narratives, and spiritual visions from different periods of her life. Edward Maitland, her close intellectual collaborator and biographer, prepared the collection after her death and published its first edition in 1888. The book moves between vivid symbolic scenes and sustained tales, treating dreaming as a mode of ethical and religious inquiry rather than private fantasy. Later editions included editorial work by Samuel Hopgood Hart, extending the text's publication history beyond Maitland's arrangement. Dreams and Dream Stories belongs to Kingsford and Maitland's broader esoteric collaboration, but its dream-based form gives unusually direct access to her imaginative method and recurring concerns with conscience, transformation, and spiritual responsibility.
