Anne Burt edits and writes fiction and essays about family, migration, identity, and the stories people inherit. Counterpoint published her first novel, The Dig, in 2023. It follows Sarajevo-born siblings Antonia and Paul, who are adopted into a wealthy Minnesota contracting family after being found amid wartime destruction. Years later, Antonia’s legal career and Paul’s disappearance draw her back to Thebes, Minnesota, where concealed family history intersects with corporate power and questions about her biological mother. Burt shapes the novel in conversation with Sophocles’ Antigone, translating conflicts among law, loyalty, kinship, and public duty into a contemporary Midwestern setting. She previously edited My Father Married Your Mother and coedited About Face with Christina Baker Kline, and her shorter work has appeared in literary and journalistic venues. The Dig joins the momentum of a mystery with the moral structure of tragedy, asking how belonging changes when family narratives prove incomplete.
