Anne Swärd is a Swedish novelist and member of the Swedish Academy whose fiction is known for sensuous language, psychologically intense relationships, and recurring questions about dangerous love. Breathless is the English title of her third novel, Till sista andetaget, first published in Sweden in 2010. The narrative follows Lo from a lonely childhood in southern Sweden through an enduring bond with her older neighbor Lukas and later journeys to Stockholm, Krakow, Budapest, and New York. The English edition was translated by Deborah Bragan-Turner. Breathless received the Hjalmar Söderberg Helga Prize and the Bokcirklar Readers Award, extending the recognition Swärd had earned for Arctic Summer and Quicksand. She later published Vera and Jackie and entered the Swedish Academy in 2019. In Breathless, travel does not sever the influence of Lo’s earliest attachments. Instead, the novel returns to how memory, desire, freedom, and self-protection shape the choices she carries into later life.
