Annie Wedekind
Annie Wedekind writes horse-centered fiction grounded in experience as a rider. A Horse of Her Own follows fourteen-year-old Jane Ryan, who hopes to advance at Sunny Acres while riding Beau. When that expectation collapses, Jane is asked to work with Lancelot, a difficult warmblood demanding patience, skill, and renewed confidence. The book was Wedekind’s first novel, preceding her Breyer Horse Collection stories. It places Jane’s friendships, competition, and feelings for Ben Reyes beside her effort to restore confidence with a horse. A Horse of Her Own therefore treats riding as more than scenery. Wedekind uses stable routines, loss, training, patient care, and responsibility to shape a coming-of-age narrative in which progress depends on honest assessment, persistence, and willingness to form a new partnership after disappointment and wholly unexpected change alike.
