Anthony Marra builds novels around the pressure that historical upheaval places on private loyalties, losses, and acts of reinvention. His debut, A Constellation of Vital Phenomena, received the National Book Critics Circle's John Leonard Prize and the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award. He followed it with the linked story collection The Tsar of Love and Techno. Mercury Pictures Presents moves between Fascist Italy and 1940s Hollywood through Maria Lagana, an associate producer at a struggling film studio populated by immigrants and European refugees. The novel blends historical fiction with satire as its characters confront censorship, wartime propaganda, typecasting, and the bargains required to survive in the movie business. Hogarth published the American edition, and the publisher identifies historical and literary fiction as its principal genres. Marra earned an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop and was a Stegner Fellow at Stanford.
