Antonio García Cubas was a Mexican geographer, cartographer, historian, and public official whose work helped describe the country's territory during the nineteenth century. Reports on the Maya Indians of Yucatan vol. IX No. 3 includes his note alongside accounts by Santiago Méndez, Pedro Sánchez de Aguilar, and Francisco Hernández, edited by Marshall H. Saville for the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation. García Cubas entered government service in the Dirección de Fomento y Colonización and later worked on fiscal statistics and administrative maps for the Ministry of Finance. His major publications included an atlas of the Mexican republic and a general national map, projects that combined geographical measurement with historical and demographic information. He also belonged to the Mexican Society of Geography and Statistics. The Maya compilation reflects one part of that wider documentary practice, preserving his contribution within a collaborative ethnographic record rather than presenting a single-author monograph.
