Archelaus appears in late antique Christian tradition as a bishop of Carchar in northern Mesopotamia and the principal speaker in debates with Mani. The Acts Of The Disputation With The Heresiarch Manes preserves a long narrative of those encounters, including speeches, letters, and accounts of Manichaean teaching. Modern scholarship treats the text cautiously: its assumed author is not securely identified, Hegemonius is associated with its composition, and the work survives complete in a late fourth-century Latin version rather than its earliest form. Greek fragments also remain. The Acts Of The Disputation With The Heresiarch Manes was nevertheless important to later readers because it transmitted information about Manichaeism and presented a public religious controversy through dramatic dialogue. Archelaus serves at once as the ecclesiastical figure named in tradition and the literary defender around whom the account is organized. Reading the work under his name therefore requires preserving the distinction between its traditional attribution and the uncertain authorship, language, and date established by textual scholarship.
