Ariel Sabar reports and writes nonfiction that often begins with a personal story before expanding into cultural history or investigation. Heart of the City, published in 2011, follows nine couples whose relationships began at notable New York locations. The book combines interviews, urban history, and reflections on how public places shape private encounters. Sabar’s debut, My Father’s Paradise, traced his father’s Kurdish Jewish family history and received the National Book Critics Circle Award for autobiography. He later wrote Veritas, an investigation of the disputed Gospel of Jesus’s Wife fragment, which became an Edgar Award finalist. Sabar has worked for newspapers including the Baltimore Sun and Providence Journal and is a staff writer at The Atlantic. His reporting has taken him across Africa, Europe, Scandinavia, and the Middle East. Heart of the City represents the warmer social-history side of a career equally comfortable with memoir, archival research, and long-form investigation.
