Author: Arthur Keyser
Arthur Keyser, fully named Arthur Louis Keyser, served in colonial administration and wrote books shaped by travel in Southeast Asia and the Pacific. From Jungle to Java appeared in 1897 with the subtitle The Trivial Impressions of a Short Excursion to Netherlands India. Framed through the observations of “Mr. X,” an officer stationed in a protected Malay state, its itinerary covers Singapore, Batavia, Buitenzorg, villages, estates, and volcanic landscapes. The narrative mixes travel description with commentary on colonial society and Javanese customs, reflecting the assumptions of its period as well as Keyser’s familiarity with regional administration. His other works include Our Cruise in New Guinea, Cut by the Mess, and An Exile’s Romance. Keyser lived from 1856 to 1924. From Jungle to Java remains a useful example of late nineteenth-century British travel writing about the Dutch East Indies.
