Asale Angel- Ajani is a writer, professor, and cultural anthropologist whose fiction and nonfiction examine race, migration, class, gender, and family memory. Publishing under the byline Asale Angel-Ajani, she made her fiction debut with A Country You Can Leave in 2023. The novel follows sixteen-year-old Lara and her Russian mother, Yevgenia, after they move to a mobile-home community in California’s desert. Their unsettled life gives Angel-Ajani a close frame for exploring economic precarity, a complicated mother-daughter bond, and Lara’s effort to imagine an independent future. MCD and Farrar, Straus and Giroux issued the novel, which draws part of its title from a line associated with Joseph Brodsky. Angel-Ajani had already published nonfiction and taught at the City College of New York, experience that helps position the book within her wider study of mobility and belonging. A Country You Can Leave joins literary coming-of-age fiction with social observation while keeping Lara’s changing understanding of home at the center.
