All the Bright Places pairs a girl grieving her sister with a boy who is counting the days he stays awake, and it does not arrange a rescue for either of them.

Niven lost someone close to her in circumstances near to the ones in the book and has written about it, and it carries resources in the back matter rather than a tidy resolution. It was filmed by Netflix.

She also writes historical fiction and nonfiction, including a book about the women who flew for the American war effort, and the range between those and the young adult work is wider than most careers manage.
