Azel Ames combined medicine, public service, military surgery, and historical writing with a particular interest in the Pilgrim voyage. He served in the Massachusetts legislature and later worked as an army surgeon during the Spanish-American War. The Mayflower and Her Log carries a 1901 publication date and the chronological subtitle July 15, 1620 to May 6, 1621 and the claim that its account was drawn chiefly from original sources. Ames reconstructed preparations in England and the Netherlands, the roles of the Mayflower and Speedwell, the Atlantic crossing, and the first months at Plymouth. He also discussed the ship, crew, passengers, and surviving records while marking places where evidence remained uncertain. Membership in the Pilgrim Society connected the project to organized historical commemoration, but the book's appendices, maps, and source discussions gave it a documentary purpose. The Mayflower and Her Log remains Ames's best-known work and reflects both his antiquarian research and his professional habit of assembling detailed evidence.
