Barb Rosenstock
Barb Rosenstock creates rigorously researched picture books about artists, inventors, explorers, and other historical figures. The Noisy Paint Box tells the childhood story of abstract painter Vasily Kandinsky, emphasizing his experience of colors as sounds and sounds as colors. Mary GrandPré illustrated the book, which Alfred A. Knopf published in 2014 and which received a Caldecott Honor the next year. Rosenstock later worked with GrandPré on further art-centered biographies, including Vincent Can't Sleep, Through the Window, and Mornings with Monet. Her background in elementary education and corporate design supports an approach that joins documentary back matter with playful language, giving young readers both a narrative entry point and a route toward deeper research.
