Author: Henry Gally Knight
Henry Gally Knight was a British traveller, politician, poet, and writer on architecture whose books grew from journeys through Europe and the eastern Mediterranean. His literary work ranged across Poems on Various Subjects, Eastern Sketches, in Verse, and the paired tales Phrosyne a Grecian Tale; Alashtar; An Arabian Tale. Hannibal in Bithynia. a Play. turned his verse toward historical drama, while Foreign and Domestic View of the Catholic Question addressed a contemporary political debate. Knight later concentrated on medieval buildings. An Architectural Tour In Normandy records his study of Norman churches, and The Normans In Sicily extends that inquiry southward. The fuller form The Normans in Sicily; being a sequel to “An architectural tour in Normandy” makes the relationship between the two surveys explicit. His travels gave both phases a shared geographical foundation. He also served as a member of Parliament. Architects Richard Hussey and George Moore assisted his fieldwork in Normandy and Sicily respectively.
