Bill McGuire
Bill McGuire is a volcanologist, climate scientist, and writer whose fiction draws directly on his study of environmental hazards. Skyseed, his debut novel, appeared through The Book Guild in 2020 and turns the risks of climate engineering into a speculative techno-thriller. Its imagined project uses experimental technology to alter atmospheric carbon, placing scientists inside a political conspiracy whose effects grow far beyond its planners’ control. McGuire describes it as a fast-paced thriller with speculative elements, while independent reviewers place it within climate fiction and eco-fiction. That subject connects closely to his academic career as Professor Emeritus of Geophysical and Climate Hazards at University College London and to his public writing on planetary risk. His nonfiction includes Hothouse Earth, Waking the Giant, and A Guide to the End of the World. Across those books and his fiction, McGuire translates technical debates about climate, volcanoes, and geoengineering into narratives for general readers without separating scientific choices from their political consequences.
