Birutė Galdikas
Birutė Galdikas was a primatologist, anthropologist, educator, and conservationist whose long-term field research transformed scientific understanding of orangutans. She arrived in Indonesian Borneo in 1971 and established Camp Leakey with support from Louis Leakey and the National Geographic Society. Reflections of Eden combines the story of that research with close observation of orangutan life and the growing pressures on rainforest habitat. Galdikas later founded Orangutan Foundation International and taught at Simon Fraser University for more than four decades. Her patient field methods documented behaviour and ecology that had previously been little understood, while her public work linked research with habitat protection and rehabilitation. The book therefore sits at the meeting point of memoir, primatology, and conservation history, recording both scientific discovery and sustained responsibility to the animals she studied.
