Black Hawk

Black Hawk (1767-1838), or Ma-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak, was a war leader of the Sauk nation in what is now Illinois. He resisted American expansion onto his people's lands, led the 1832 Black Hawk War, and afterward dictated the first widely read Native American autobiography.
