Blake J. Harris built The History of the Future out of more than a hundred interviews, following Oculus from its founding in 2012 through the two-billion-dollar Facebook acquisition and the years after. HarperCollins published it in February 2019. His earlier book, Console Wars, had done much the same for the 1990s, tracking Tom Kalinske through six years running Sega of America against Nintendo; reviewers praised the research and disliked the reconstructed dialogue. Harris and his business partner Jonah Tulis co-directed a documentary from it, on CBS All Access in September 2020, with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg producing.
