Bobbi Miller
Bobbi Miller draws on folklore and history as a storyteller and children’s author. The Girls of Gettysburg, published by Holiday House in 2014, presents the Civil War battle through three young perspectives: Annie Gordon, Tillie Pierce, and Grace Bryan. Annie enters the conflict disguised as a boy, while Tillie and Grace confront the upheaval from different sides of the battlefield. Historical Novel Society notes the novel’s alternating viewpoints and its attention to the experiences of girls during the Gettysburg battle. Holiday House’s teaching guide places the story in the context of Gettysburg, civilian life, and primary-source inquiry. Miller’s approach gives young readers several ways into a well-known event rather than treating history as a list of dates and commanders. Her background as a performer and collector of traditional tales also informs the book’s strongly voiced narration. The Girls of Gettysburg is therefore both historical fiction and a study of courage, divided loyalties, and survival.
