Bonaventure Hammer

Bonaventure Hammer was a German-American Franciscan priest, writer, translator, and compiler whose devotional books served English-speaking Catholics around the turn of the twentieth century. Born in Baden in 1842, he entered the Franciscan order in Cincinnati and was ordained in 1865. General Catholic Devotions appeared through Benziger Brothers in 1909 with ecclesiastical approval. The collection organizes morning and evening prayers, preparation for Mass, confession and Communion, the Stations of the Cross, litanies, and devotions for particular occasions. Hammer’s role is accurately described as compiler because the book arranges an inherited body of Catholic prayer rather than presenting one continuous argument. He also wrote German-language histories of Catholic and Franciscan life within the United States and translated Lew Wallace’s Ben-Hur into German. His ministry included assignments in several American cities, with long periods in Lafayette, Indiana. General Catholic Devotions reflects the practical pastoral dimension of his career, offering an ordered reference for worship, examination, thanksgiving, petition, and remembrance.
