Bret Harte was an American short-story writer, poet, editor, and diplomat whose name became closely associated with literary depictions of California mining communities. As editor of the Overland Monthly, he published The Luck of Roaring Camp in 1868, the story that brought him broad recognition through its portrait of miners caring for an orphaned child. Legends and Tales gathers work from his Western storytelling, where humor, sentiment, local speech, and sudden reversals often complicate stock frontier types. The Crusade of the Excelsior, issued by Houghton Mifflin in the late nineteenth century, belongs to his later fiction and extends his interest in travel, cultural encounter, and Californian settings. Harte wrote poetry and served as a United States consul in Germany and Scotland before settling in London. His enduring influence rests less on documentary realism than on the vivid narrative forms through which distant readers imagined Gold Rush society and its outsiders.
