Bruno Lessing was the pen name of Rudolph Edgar Block, a New York journalist, editor, and fiction writer whose stories often portrayed Jewish immigrant life. Children of Men, published in 1903, gathers short fiction about families and working people confronting poverty, aspiration, faith, and social change. Rather than presenting its characters as types, the collection gives their arguments, bargains, disappointments, and loyalties room to unfold within crowded urban neighborhoods. Block worked for newspapers associated with William Randolph Hearst and became an important early editor of newspaper comic features. He also wrote travel journalism under the heading Vagabondia, reporting from journeys far beyond New York. Other books under the Lessing name include With the Best Intention and Children of Men. His career joined popular newspaper culture to compact literary sketches, with dialogue and irony carrying much of the social observation. Children of Men is central to that work because it records the pressures of migration and city life through intimate conflicts rather than abstract commentary.
