Author: Henry Iliowizi

Henry Iliowizi was a rabbi, lecturer, poet, and writer born in the Russian Empire in 1850 who built his later career after settling in America. His early verse included Sol: An Epic Poem, printed by the Tribune Printing Company in Minneapolis in 1882. Herod: A Tragedy followed in 1884 under the fuller subtitle “a historical tragedy, in five acts,” showing his sustained interest in biblical and historical subjects. The 1900 collection The Weird Orient brought together nine mystical tales illustrated by William Sherman Potts. Its stories draw on folklore, legend, and the supernatural, placing Iliowizi within the early history of American speculative writing as well as Jewish literary culture. These books move among poetry, drama, and short fiction instead of remaining in one genre. Together they show how he adapted ancient settings and inherited tales for English-language readers while also working publicly as a religious teacher and communal figure until his death in 1911.
