Buffalo Bill
Buffalo Bill was the public name of William F. Cody, the frontier scout and showman who turned episodes from his life into a durable American legend. The Life of Hon. William F. Cody Known as Buffalo Bill was first published in 1879 as his autobiography, following his youth in Kansas Territory and work as a messenger, hunter, Army scout, and guide. Its dramatic style helped establish the persona later carried around the world by Buffalo Bill’s Wild West. The Adventures of Buffalo Bill is a later compilation associated with Cody’s life story and published after his death, with an introductory account placing those adventures within his full career. Because retellings, revised editions, and memorial volumes often changed the wording and arrangement of Cody’s narrative, edition details matter. Together, these books reveal both the historical experiences Cody claimed and the publishing process through which a working scout became an international entertainment figure.
