Carl Van Vechten

Carl Van Vechten (1880–1964) was an American critic, novelist, and photographer. He worked as an assistant music critic at The New York Times and published several collections of essays on music and the modern arts between 1915 and 1920, before turning to fiction in the 1920s. A prominent supporter of the Harlem Renaissance, he later became well known for his portrait photography and served as Gertrude Stein's literary executor.
