Carlo Goldoni was an eighteenth-century Venetian playwright and librettist who helped reshape Italian comedy around observed character, everyday speech, and social life. The Comedies Of Carlo Goldoni gathers four plays in English translation: A Curious Mishap, The Beneficent Bear, The Fan, and The Spendthrift Miser. Helen Zimmern edited the collection and supplied its introduction for the 1892 London edition published by David Stott. The selection shows Goldoni moving beyond the fixed masks and improvised scenarios associated with commedia dell’arte while retaining quick misunderstandings, household conflicts, courtship, and comic reversals. Goldoni trained in law and worked with theatrical companies before making drama his principal vocation.
