Carmen Sylva gave Elisabeth of Wied a distinct authorial identity, the first queen of Romania and a prolific poet, storyteller, dramatist, essayist, and translator. Born in 1843 near Neuwied, she married Prince Carol of Romania in 1869 and became queen when the country was proclaimed a kingdom in 1881. Pilgrim Sorrow gathers allegorical tales in which grief, love, art, duty, and the search for truth take personified or fairy-tale forms. Helen Zimmern translated the cycle from German and supplied an introduction connecting its emotional concerns with Elisabeth's losses, including the death of her only child. The collection includes The Child of the Sun, The Realm of Peace, The Inexorable, The Hermit, and A Life. Beyond writing, Elisabeth supported music, literature, education, and charitable work in Romania. Her pen name, evoking song and forest, separated the authorial identity from her royal title while preserving the wooded landscape that shaped her imagination.
