Carol Guthrie Heilman

Carol Guthrie Heilman writes humorous Southern mysteries featuring an older protagonist whose curiosity repeatedly disrupts expectations about retirement. Agnes Hopper Bets on Murder continues the Agnes Hopper series with its sharp-witted central character facing a suspicious death and a circle of competing explanations. Published by Boutique of Quality Books, the novel follows Agnes after Agnes Hopper Shakes Up Sweetbriar, extending the friendships, rivalries, and family connections established around her. Heilman’s approach pairs a cozy-mystery structure with comedy drawn from age, independence, and the assumptions other people make about Agnes. The series setting gives recurring relationships as much importance as the central puzzle. Agnes Hopper Bets on Murder introduces Carol Guthrie Heilman’s balance of investigation and character humor: Agnes observes details, questions convenient stories, and refuses to let other people define the limits of her involvement. Readers who enjoy community-centered mysteries will find the book grounded in personality, conversation, and the practical consequences of a determined amateur asking unwelcome questions.
