Carol Lovekin
Carol Lovekin is a Welsh novelist whose fiction blends family history, women's lives, folklore, and the uncanny landscapes of rural Wales. Honno released Snow Sisters in 2017 as her second novel. It centers on two sisters, Meredith and Verity, and the long shadow cast by their mother, Allegra, at a remote family house. Lovekin moves between past and present as memories, withheld truths, and supernatural presences complicate the sisters' return to one another. The Welsh setting is integral to the book's mood, with weather, house, garden, and local storytelling carrying emotional as well as Gothic weight. Rather than treating ghosts as a separate spectacle, she uses them to express what a family has failed to acknowledge. Snow Sisters followed her debut, Ghostbird, and continued her interest in women negotiating inherited stories and difficult bonds. The novel helped establish Lovekin's characteristic form of Welsh Gothic fiction, joining lyrical nature writing with domestic mystery and a patient study of grief, loyalty, and reconciliation between sisters.
