Amulya Malladi
Amulya Malladi builds novels around personal decisions shaped by wider social and cultural pressures. A House for Happy Mothers, published by Lake Union Publishing in 2016, alternates between Priya in California and Asha in India after Priya seeks help from a surrogacy clinic. Malladi has explained that BBC reporting prompted her to investigate the subject, while the novel’s two viewpoints let each woman’s hopes, finances and family obligations remain visible. The book therefore approaches its central arrangement through parallel lives rather than a single outsider’s perspective. Malladi’s own account of writing the novel also identifies the clinic’s name as the source of its title.
