Born in Missouri in 1849, she taught in Michigan after the early death of her husband and later turned to writing as her principal work. Order No. 11, her best-known historical novel, established her reputation through its treatment of divided communities during the Civil War. Their Christmas Golden Wedding (1913) belongs to the shorter holiday fiction she published late in her career. Illustrated by Emlen McConnell and issued by Thomas Y. Crowell, it centers on a family commemoration of fifty years of marriage. The compact format differs from Stanley’s longer historical novels, yet it retains her interest in memory, kinship, and the meaning attached to shared anniversaries.
