Caroline Brooks DuBois
Caroline Brooks DuBois writes verse novels for young readers, drawing on her experience as an English teacher. Ode to a Nobody follows Quinn, a Tennessee student who uses poetry to make sense of school, family strain, friendship, and the aftermath of a tornado. Holiday House published the novel in 2022, and its catalogue identifies the book as middle-grade fiction in verse. DuBois taught in the Nashville area and received recognition as a Blue Ribbon Teacher. Her earlier verse novel, The Places We Sleep, also places a young narrator's private writing against a period of upheaval. In Ode to a Nobody, poems become both the form of the story and the means by which Quinn begins to recognize her own voice.
