Cathy Freeman

Freeman lit the flame at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and ten days later won the four hundred metres in front of a home crowd, then sat down on the track. She had carried both the Australian and the Aboriginal flags on a lap of honour in 1994, which officials objected to at the time. Her grandmother was one of the Stolen Generations, taken from her family as a child, and Freeman has said that is what the flags were about. Born to Run is her own account.
