Katie Piper
1983
Katie Piper gave up her right to anonymity in 2009 and let a Channel 4 crew film her treatment; the documentary that followed, Katie: My Beautiful Face, drew more than three million viewers. Born in Andover, Hampshire, on 12 October 1983, she trained as a beautician and was building a career in modelling and digital television presenting when, in March 2008, an acid attack arranged by a former boyfriend left her blind in one eye and with severe burns to her face and throat. Daniel Lynch and Stefan Sylvestre both received life sentences the following year. Beautiful, her account of the attack and of the many operations and skin grafts that came after it, was published by Ebury Press in February 2011; the long subtitle on some editions, A beautiful girl. An evil man. One inspiring true story of courage, is the paperback's. She founded the Katie Piper Foundation late in 2009 for people living with burns and disfigurement, has presented Bodyshockers, Songs of Praise and Loose Women, and was appointed OBE in the 2022 New Year Honours.
