Charles E. Beveridge
Charles E. Beveridge devoted his career as a historian, editor, and preservationist to the work of landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Beveridge served for four decades as series editor of The Papers of Frederick Law Olmsted, helping bring the project’s twelve volumes of writings, plans, and visual material to completion. Frederick Law Olmsted, created with photographer Paul Rocheleau and editor David Larkin, presents Olmsted’s life and designed landscapes through historical interpretation and extensive photography. The first Rizzoli edition appeared during 1995; an updated edition titled Frederick Law Olmsted: Designing the American Landscape followed in 2021 for the bicentennial of Olmsted’s birth. It adds new photography and later reflection on his continuing influence. Beveridge’s scholarship also reaches readers through essays on Olmsted’s design theory, the evolution of the Olmsted firm, and the restoration of major parks. The American Society of Landscape Architects elected him an honorary member and later awarded him the Frederick Law Olmsted Medal for environmental leadership and stewardship.
