Charles Francis Saunders combined natural history, poetry, and travel writing in books attentive to plants and the cultures of the Southwest. In a Poppy Garden was his first book, a slim collection of verse published in the early twentieth century and illustrated by his wife, Elisabeth Hallowell Saunders. Its garden imagery anticipated the botanical attention that later shaped his better-known nature writing. After moving to Pasadena, Saunders wrote about California wildflowers, desert landscapes, and Indigenous communities, often working from journeys made with Elisabeth and, later, Mira Culin Saunders. Titles such as The Wild Gardens of Old California and Under the Sky in California joined observation with accessible natural history. In a Poppy Garden belongs to the beginning of that career, when lyric poems and Elisabeth’s artwork established a shared interest in flowers as both specimens and sources of feeling. The volume therefore connects Saunders’s early poetry with the regional nature books that followed.
